How To Get The Ideas Flowing

I have found over the years of running my own internet-based business that while the home-office is a great place to execute great ideas, it’s rarely all that interesting of a place to come up with ideas and brainstorm.

The best ideas tend come when you remove yourself from your normal work environment. The most effective one I have found is traveling, especially to an interesting and new environment.

Coming up with new ideas and finding new innovative ways to market to your audience as well as refining what you currently do is a must when running your own business. You rely on yourself to be the creative source for your business, and your business ultimately relies on your creativity.

Creativity in what you do is not only important just for the enjoyment of yourself and your own work experience, but everybody else who you share your work with benefits that much more when you have something new and interesting to offer.

If you want to get a fresh new perspective on your life and on your work, take a trip somewhere new and exciting. Take the train North, book a flight somewhere, go visit a relative, or hit the road and just visit somewhere new for a little while.

Changing up your environment and getting out of the routine is essential when it comes to coming up with new inspiration. You’ll also likely find that after returning from seeing something new just for a little bit, you appreciate your work space when you return that much more.

Other great ways to get ideas are:

  • Take a long walk or hike
  • Go jogging
  • Go to a seminar with people who share similar ideas
  • Get a massage
  • Play some music
  • Take some time off and relax
  • Exercise

When the mind and body has been doing something so repeatedly for a while, it tends to shut down and quit operating at it’s highest capacity. It gets bored, like a small child!

So taking the time to “indulge” that inner child and doing whatever it is that helps you relax may actually be more beneficial than forcing yourself into your office and saying you’re going to complete all of your work by a certain deadline.

Setting deadlines for yourself can be great for productivity, but over time can cause stress that needs to be eased out by relaxing and getting out and “stretching your legs”.

You need to take the time to properly rest and relax your physical body as well as your mind if you want to be a healthy, productive entrepreneur. It’s the mind-body connection!

Like I mentioned, your entire business hinges on your ability to come up with new and innovative ideas to solve problems, and you can’t think your best when your mind and body are overly-stressed or just plain tired.

Once you’ve gotten to the space where you’ve finally relaxed and can actually think clearly again, you’re going to want to have an effective way to record all of your ideas.

Sometimes an old-fashioned journal is the best way to go about it, but there are many other options depending on what works best for you.

The best thing that I have found is a digital voice recorder. I recommend the products made by Olympus as I’ve had good experience with them, specifically the WS-110 model.

What are you waiting for? Get out of that rut you’ve been stuck in and get out and see something new!
